'Friday Night' Divisions

One of the greatest things about Friday Night Lights is its realism. The show prides itself on it and its small, but devout, audience praises it. And one of the greatest aspects of its realism is the relationship between Tami and Eric. What couple hasn't fought over money? And what spouse hasn't "forgotten" to tell the other (the one who keeps the books) about a check they wrote (or a check card transaction), and consequently, messed up the other person's budgeting? We've all been there. But in this case, Eric didn't so much forget about the $3000 check he wrote to Under Armour for new team uniforms (after burning the old ones in a symbolic gesture), he just sorta-kinda failed to mention it to Tami. Probably because he knew it would illicit the exact reaction it did, and frankly, Tami was completely justified. And in a nod to the beautiful complexity of this show, so was Eric. The Taylors have a very good relationship, so after discussing the matter further (and when Eric was a bit more sober), Tami wound up supporting Eric's decision.
Unfortunately, things weren't quite as honky-dorey on the East Dillon Lions' sidelines. But hey, at least they finished the game this week. And scored a touchdown! But, the team has to come together and gel if they want to start winning some games. Right now, they're letting their differences and their egos divide them. In the case of Luke Cafferty, he's allowing his incessant need for constant stroking and pats on the back from Coach get in his way of being a fantastic player at East. He did seem to finally get it at the end (after a house call from Coach Taylor). Can I just say, again, how much I'm loving Riggins helping out Coach Taylor and the Lions??!! Best idea of the season! Meanwhile, it seems that Crazy Artist is helping Matt while Julie may be holding him back. Ultimately, if art makes Matt happy, and it seemed there at the end that it does when he had that "Ah ha!" moment with the sculpture, then staying in Dillon isn't the best option for him. But, Julie is in Dillon and will be for at least the remainder of the school year. It's the classic dilemma of whether to follow your heart or your inner drive to pursue your dream. Some times, the two are congruent, but most of the time they are not. Matt will have to decide, but something tells me that Julie may decide for him. I think Crazy Artist had a bigger impact on her than Matt realizes. Whatever happens, this show is sure to make is realistic and well-written. Friday Night Lights is all-new and commercial-free Wednesday nights on DirecTV's 101. The fourth season will be seen in its entirety next year on NBC. More at Pass The Remote... |

A Tale of Two Dillons
posted Thu, 05 Nov 2009 14:37:00 GMT
I'm starting to miss the departed Friday Night Lights characters a little less. Maybe it's just that the abrupt changes in the premiere have had a week to sink in, or maybe it's because we got to know some of the new characters a little better, or perhaps, it's just the prevailing awesome-ness of Eric and Tami Taylor, but somehow the new FNL was a little easier to swallow this week. I like the way the writers are developing the central conflicts inherent in Coach Taylor's new coaching position. First, he has no team. Or at least he didn't until that 10 p.m. practice. Now, he has a group of kids who are willing to give him a second chance. They're willing to put the past behind them and go forward with their season. But they're going to need to learn how to play first. They need to craft their raw talent, work together as a team, and trust their coach (even if he didn't let them finish their fight during the first game). Otherwise, it's going to be a very long (and painful) season.
Meanwhile, Tami has her own fight to finish back at Dillon High. After a little tip from Buddy Garrity, she's in the hot seat for following the zoning laws. One of the Panthers' star players was technically ineligible to play at Dillon because his real address (as opposed to that mail box in front of the empty field) was zoned for East Dillon (home of Coach Taylor's Lions). She, being principal and all, had to boot him from Dillon and send him over to East. Great move for Coach Taylor, but the decision is making his wife a little less popular. Oh, and she also got a threat from Joe McCoy: push the mail box issue and he'll do some mail box digging of his own. How great was that scene at the booster club meeting when she marched right in there and broadcast his threat??!! LOVE Tami!! Later at the pep rally, the students didn't give her the most welcoming of introductions, but something tells me that Tami Taylor can handle some booing from the students. Maybe it's just me, but I think Landry is smitten. I'll always carry the torch for him and Tyra, but Landry and Jess could be cute too. And speaking of couples, Matt and Julie seemed better this week (other than her accidentally insulting his community college art education). I'm not sure how things are going to end up between these two, but it looks like it's about to get interesting next week. Finally, BEST DECISION SO FAR: Riggins helping Coach Taylor at East. Love it! Emmys nominations 2009: Well done!
posted Mon, 20 Jul 2009 04:25:00 GMT
Photo: Emmy nominee Simon Baker of the CBS drama "The Mentalist" by Jennifer Squires Biller If you haven’t heard, the Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday. We have to wait until September 20 to see who takes home the naked statues known as Emmys and who shows up with their mother as their date, but meanwhile, here’s a look at the nominees. Overall, I’m quite pleased with this year’s list. (No, I haven’t been drinking.) It seems Emmy voters may finally be getting that there is more to television than HBO. I’m absolutely over-the-moon that Pushing Daisies’ Kristin Chenoweth, How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris, and The Mentalist’s Simon Baker scored nominations. Also, a great big high five for Boston Legal - which delivered some Emmy-worthy television in its final episodes - and for Vanessa Williams, who is always downright delicious playing a devilish diva on Ugly Betty. And I’m hoping that this is the year Chandra Wilson gets her well-deserved Emmy for her work on Grey’s Anatomy. Oh sure, there were several snubs, but not like we usually see. Most notably, where was Josh Holloway of Lost? He has done excellent work and should be recognized. Also, there is no excuse for the complete shut out of Friday Night Lights. It’s one of the best dramas on TV! Just as disappointing, was the lack of love for Psych and its stars. Dule Hill and James Roday make me laugh out loud every week. That’s my opinion. What do you think of this year’s nominees?
